Received a copy of the e-book in return for an honest review, own the paperback.
I don’t usually read this genre, typically keeping it at arm’s length. However, after reading the synopsis, I was instantly drawn to it and had to read it. Unquestionably, not a single regret once I finished The Ghost of You by Kristen Darling.
It centers around Kaitlyn Vandere, a young, beautiful, and extremely smart young women with her whole life ahead of her. There’s only one thing holding her back from living it to it’s fullest: a debilitating anxiety disorder caused by traumatic events stemming from her childhood. All she wants is to feel safe, and her journey will take you on a roller coaster of a ride as she tries to find it—unable to name it when it’s staring her square in the face.
Whether or not you’re a fan of Fifty Shades, it doesn’t matter. The story-line, in my opinion, is highly original, brilliantly written, executed, and you will probably feel every single emotion conceivable. Not to mention the superb editing, the absence of repetition, and clichés. It had me turning the pages from the beginning, not wanting to put it down. When a novel outside of my normal genre holds my attention hostage throughout, it tells you something.
Each character is well thought through, even the ones you want to hate, and they all had their place within the story. The author masterfully balances sex, tension, torment, and enough twists to keep you fully engaged. And the ending! You will never see it coming.
Even if you’ve never been through anything remotely close to the protagonist’s past, you will come to appreciate it, learning not everything is always as it seems.
I look forward to reading more from this fantastic author!
