J. D. Estrada’s first novel in his The Human Cycle Series, Only Human is a well-constructed, imaginative, thought-provoking story. As a reader who usually stays away from the vampire genre since sparkly vampires had been introduced, I am extremely happy I decided to overlook their mention in the synopsis.
It’s been a while since I’ve come across a novel which has a world so exceptionally constructed, characters that are realistic in both relationships and dialogue, that not only has you thinking, but evokes so many emotions as you follow the journey of our main protagonist, Nathaniel Runnels—a human amongst what’s supposed to be of fairy tales and folklore. It’s rare to find a new author who emerges with such a superbly written book. To the movie folks: instead of the remakes of the remakes, here’s something original and worth your consideration!
I have to admit, though, I found myself waning through the first third of the book or so. Finding more questions than answers, I easily envisioned myself being trapped within the underground maze of halls and never-ending doors. But don’t let that dissuade you; it has its place, and it all comes together once you reach the end. Highly recommended!
Already have book two, Shadow of a Human, and can’t wait to read on.
